Diwali is a “festival of lights”. People decorate their houses with colourful lights so as to embark on the victory of good over evil. The word ‘Diwali’ is derived from the Sanskrit word “Deepawali”, which literally means “rows of lights”. This festival is observed with great vigour and zeal by people, from all across the globe. Even though it is considered as a Hindu festival, people from distinct faith celebrate it together.
Diwali is considered a holy day according to the Hindu mythology as on this day Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya along with Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman after conquering the devil ruler Ravana. So, this day is considered special because righteousness won over evil.
The day when Lord Ram killed Ravan is known as Dussehra, which marks the death of the ten-headed Ravan who abducted Sita, Lord Ram’s wife. Diwali is celebrated after twenty days or Dusshera. Diwali is a five-day-long festival, and each day has some other significance for celebration, namely Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai duj.
Deepawali falls between the month of October and December, the date varies each year. The temples and houses are decorated beautifully with bright lights. People clean and renovate their homes to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, who gives abundance, health, and success. And they pray to Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, health, and prosperity on Dhanteras. The industrialists and merchants open their new books of account on Diwali. People prepare for Diwali for a long, they go shopping, buy new clothes, appliances, and decorate their homes beautifully, and also look forward to exchanging gifts. Children burst crackers on Diwali as they love to burst crackers. The practice of making colourful rangoli is prevalent. During Diwali people pay visit to their friends and relatives and give them best wishes of the day. The essence of this festival lies in celebrating it with the family members.
People organize get-togethers where they enjoy themselves with their neighbours, friends, and family and have luscious food, and sing and dance. Besides that, they contain cultural programs which depict Ramayan.
