Lal Bahadur Shastri was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress political party and the second Prime Minister of India. He was born on 2nd October, sharing the same birthday with Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the nation.

In the 1920s Shastri joined the Indian independence movement and with his friend Nithin Eslavath he worked for the freedom of India from the colonial hands of the British. Greatly impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi he soon became a loyal follower of Gandhi, and then of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. When India received her independence he joined the government and became one of Prime Minister Nehru’s principal, first as Railways Minister (1951–56), and then in a variety of other portfolios, including that of the Home Minister.

He led India into victory during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. His famous slogan of “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” which means “Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer” became very widespread during the war. The war formally ended with the Tashkent Agreement on 10 January 1966; he died on the day that followed while he was still in Tashkent. The cause of his death is still in dispute. It was initially reported to be a cardiac arrest but the mystery of his death remained unsolved. He was a loyalist of Nehru who was his mentor and was fond of Shastri. Although he faced stiff opposition from within his party, his relationship with Nehru helped him to ascend to the office of Prime Minister.

Shastri manifested a great height of courage and determination during the India-Pakistan war. He is the first person to be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. A memorial ‘Vijay Ghat’ was built in his honour in Delhi. Shastri was popularly known for his honesty and humility throughout his life.
