Sri Aurobindo was an eminent Indian philosopher, yogi, guru, poet, and nationalist. He involved himself in the Indian movement for independence from British rule. During the initial part of his mission, he was one of the influential leaders of India in its struggle for freedom and then became a spiritual reformer through Yoga and meditation. He advanced to popularity by introducing his visions on human progress and spiritual reformation.

He was one of the few who studied for the Indian Civil Service at King’s College, Cambridge in England. On his return to his motherland, India he took up various civil service works under the Maharaja of the princely state of Baroda. From then forth he became increasingly involved in nationalist politics and the revolutionary movement in Bengal. He was arrested after the outcome of a number of bomb outrages linked to his organization, but in a highly public trial where he faced charges of treason, Aurobindo could only be convicted and imprisoned for writing articles in opposition to the British rule in India because he had not committed any social offense. He was released upon lack of evidence provided against him. During his stay in jail, he had mystical and spiritual experiences which inspired him to abandon politics and embrace a path of spirituality. When he was released from the jail he moved to Pondicherry in South India to give up politics and pursue spiritual work. There he began his spiritual journey in a serious commitment.

During his stay in Pondicherry, he devised a method of spiritual practice which he called Integral Yoga. The central theme of his spiritual activity was the evolution of human life into a life divine. He believed in a spiritual realization which can not only liberate man but also transform one’s nature, enabling a divine life on earth. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram for the spiritual welfare of the people of India.
