Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10th December. This day acknowledges the defenders and advocates of human rights from all around the world. The motto of human rights happens to be ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’ One can often hear ordinary people or activists fighting for their rights. But what comprises these rights?
According to the constitution of India, human rights are the fundamental rights that provide every person with basic citizenship rights. One can enjoy these fundamental rights irrespective of religion, gender, caste, or creed. The constitution of India developed this concept between the years 1947 to 1949. As a result, we have 6 fundamental human rights in India. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the universal declaration of human rights day on 10th December, 1948.

Fundamental rights get a lot of emphasis on World Human Rights Day. It encourages the judiciaries worldwide to take proper steps to enable everyone to get equal rights.

Human Rights Day in India
In India, human rights got their recognition from Jainism and Buddhism. On 24th January 1947, under the Chairmanship of Sardar Patel, the advisory committee of the Constituent Assembly drafted the list of fundamental human rights.
- It covered the rights mentioned in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Many eminent leaders, including B. N. Rau, Dr B. R. Ambedkar, K. T. Shah, K. M. Munshi, Harman Singh, etc., were involved in this process.
- The committee report of 1928 covered 19 rights at the initial stage.
However, only 10 rights were declared as fundamental duties. Out of these 10 rights, the common ones are:
- Right to equality.
- Right to freedom.
- Right against exploitation.
- Right to freedom of religion.
- Cultural and educational rights.
- Right to constitutional remedies.
Every Indian is entitled to these aforementioned human rights. However, the basic fundamental rights did not initially include some of these rights.
Over time, the constitution incorporated the right to privacy, right to a fair trial, and right to legal aid into the list.
Our constitution acts as the protector of these fundamental rights.

The day is celebrated every year on 10 December.
Article 1 of the UDHR stated, “All human beings are born free and equal in rights and dignity.” Being equal is also aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Other themes of human rights day for the years 2019 are given below:
