  • When India gained independence in 1947, there were 13 existing districts in Assam.
  • In November 1951, North Cachar Hills and United Mikir districts were carved out of Golaghat, Nagaon, Cachar, Jayantia and Naga hills districts.
  • In 1983, Sonitpur district in Assam was carved out of Darrang; Barpeta district was carved out of Kamrup; Jorhat district was carved out of Sibsagar, Karimganj district was carved out of Cachar and Dhubri district and Kokrajhar district were carved out of Goalpara.
  • In February 2003, Kamrup Metropolitan district was carved out of Kamrup.
  • On Independence Day in 2015, the then Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, announced the establishment of five new districts in Assam. This increased the total number of districts in the state from 27 to 32.
  • Two more districts were announced on 26 January 2016 but on 7 October 2016, the status of two existing Assam districts was withdrawn.
