Essay on Mother Teresa in English

Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu affectionately known as Mother Teresa and honoured in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje which is currently the capital of North Macedonia, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. After living in North Macedonia for the eighteen years her life, she traveled to Ireland and from there to India, where she lived for most of her life.

In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation that had over 4,500 nuns and is active in 133 countries. The congregation manages homes for people who are sick and dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, and many other ailments. It also runs dispensaries, mobile clinics, children’s and family counseling programmes, as well as schools and orphanages. Members of this holy order take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, and also profess a fourth vow through which they give “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.”

Mother Teresa received a number of honours which include the Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962 and Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was canonized a saint on 4 September 2016, and the anniversary of her death is her feast day i.e. 5th September. Thousands of Catholics and pilgrims from across the globe attended the canonization to celebrate the woman who had been called “the saint of the gutters” because of her charitable work with the poor. Pope Francis spoke highly of Mother Teresa and praised her for the charitable works she did for the poorest of the poor. He reiterated that she was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcoming gestures and caring for human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded. He also invited everyone to follow her commendable examples and practice compassion towards the poor and the needy.

She is admired by many for her charitable works. Some praised her while others criticized her for her opposition to abortion. Her authorized biography was written by Navin Chawla which was published in 1992.

Mother Teresa is a saint for all to imitate no matter to which religion we belong. She saw the face of Jesus in the suffering that is the reason she cares for them selflessly. If we too are able to see the face of God in the faces of our needy brothers and sister and care for them then this world would be a heaven on earth.
