Rainwater harvesting is a way of collecting and storing rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks. It is the accumulation and storage of rainwater for our use rather than allowing it to run off and go waste. The most common method of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting. It can be used for gardens, livestock, irrigation, domestic use like cleaning, drinking, and washing. This method is one of the simplest and oldest methods of self-supply of water for households and farm use.

Rainwater harvesting is commonly done in areas having high intensity of rainfall which is well distributed in the year. Some areas worth mentioning are Himalayan areas, North Eastern States, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep Islands, Rajasthan and the Southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Rainwater harvesting is now being increasingly used for meeting the needs of rural areas particularly for drinking water purpose especially during the periods of drought.

Among many others, some of the benefits of rainwater harvesting could be discussed. It helps in lowering expense in the water supply bills, especially to the institutions. Rainwater stored in the ground affects the groundwater quality positively by diluting fluorides, nitrates and its salinity. The water is not hard which can be used in homes, industries, institutions and other commercial establishments. It can control the stress of public water supply sources. Proper channelization of rainwater helps in controlling urban flooding harvesting the rainwater from rooftops. It minimizes water demands of people from the municipality thus reduces energy consumption too in distributing water in the city.

Rainwater harvesting is the most sustainable, doable and effective way to make water available in the areas where there is a scarcity of water. It is a very low-cost method but brings along with lots of benefits for the people. Nature has provided us with sufficient resources but we should learn to tap these resources in a wise manner. Rainwater can be collected in water containers, tanks, wells and other means of storage. In most of the areas, there would never be water scarcity only if the people are willing to work hard enough to find out ways and means to store the resources available before them.
