“Cleanliness is next to Godliness”

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission is a campaign which is launched at the national level in India from 2014 to 2019 with goals to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of the cities, towns, and rural areas in India. The campaign’s official name is in Hindi and its meaning is “Clean India Mission”. The Swachh Bharat Mission is aimed at eliminating open defecation through the construction of household-owned and community-owned toilets and establishing an accountable mechanism of monitoring toilet use all over the country. Initiated by the Government of India, the mission aims to free India of open-defecation by 2 October 2019, which happens to be the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. The mission is resolved to clean the country by constructing 90 million toilets in rural India at a projected cost of ₹1.96 lakh crore. The mission will also play its role to contribute to India reaching Sustainable Development Goal 6 which was established by the UN in 2015.

Officially the campaign was launched at Rajghat, New Delhi on 2 October 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is the country’s biggest cleanliness campaign up to this date with three million government employees and students from all parts of India participating in 4,041 cities, towns, and rural areas. Prime Minister Modi has named the campaign ‘Satyagrah se Swachhagrah’ in a similar trend to ‘Champaran Satyagraha’ which was launched on 10 April 1917 by Gandhi.

The two thrusts of the mission are Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which works under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation for ‘gramin’ or ‘rural’ areas; and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which operates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs meant for the urban areas.

During the campaign numerous volunteers who are known as ‘Swachhagrahis’ which means “ambassadors of cleanliness”, have promoted indoor plumbing and community approaches to sanitation at the village level. In short, there were many who came forward to contribute to the cleanliness of the country.

All the citizens should take interest and play an active role in maintaining the cleanliness of India. It is the sole responsibility of the government to work on making India a clean nation nor the exclusive work of NGOs to engage in cleaning the country. Every citizen should play a proactive role is contributing his or her share in making India shine and make the nation an example for others to imitate.
