Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (APJ Abdul Kalam) was an Indian politician and aerospace scientist of India. He was born and raised in a place called Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He took a keen interest in science and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent nearly forty years as a scientist and science administrator mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was closely involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. For his great commitment to scientific development in India, he is known as the Missile Man of India more especially for his contribution to the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a significant organizational, technical, and political role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first after the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 with the support of both Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress. Popularly known to as the “People’s President”, he returned to his civilian life of education, writing and public service after a single term. He was given many prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India.

While delivering a speech at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, he fell and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015 at the ripe age of 83. Thousands of people including national-level dignitaries attended the funeral ceremony held in his hometown of Rameshwaram, where he was laid to rest with full state honours.

He authored many inspirational books such as “India 2020”, “Ignited Minds”, “Mission India”, “The Luminous Sparks”, “Wings of Fire”, “Inspiring Thoughts”, etc. In order to root out corruption in the country he launched a mission for youths named “What Can I Give Movement”. He dedicated his service to the nation as a visiting professor in various universities and institutes of the country.

He was an eminent scientist and engineer who also served the country tirelessly. He was a man of vision and ideas who always aimed at the development of the country in all spheres of life. He has envisioned the future of the country and highlighted the action plans about our development by 2020 in his book titled “India-2020”. According to him, the real asset of the country is its youth that’s why he has always motivated and inspired them not merely by word of mouth but with his life.
