Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is a national campaign convened by the Government of India that aims to promote awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girl children in India. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in English translation is ‘Save the daughter, educate the daughter’. The scheme was launched with initial funding of ₹100 crore with its main targets clustered in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar and Delhi.

According to 2001census data, the child gender ratio (0–6 years) in India was 927 girls per 1,000 boys, which dropped to 918 per 1,000 boys in 2011. According to the report of 2012 UNICEF ranked India 41st among 195 countries. The Sex Ratio 2011 shows a downward trend in India which is indeed a sad truth.

On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child in 2014, the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi made a speech wherein he called for the eradication of female foeticide and invited suggestions from the citizens of India via the portal MyGov.in.

The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme was launched on 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Panipat, Haryana. It seeks to address the issue of the declining child sex ratio image (CSR) and is a national initiative jointly run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It initially focused multi-sector action in hundred districts throughout the country where there was a low child sex ratio. The Olympics 2016 bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was made the brand ambassador for BBBP on 26 August 2016.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme is launched with an objective to address the issue of decreasing girl child ratio in the society as well as empowering girl child in the country. This scheme is aimed at making awareness of the importance of girl child in Indian society as well as bring forth some positive changes in the people mindset towards the girl child.
